Playwriting's a Drag

 
Playwrights are drag queens. No, really! And I'm not referring to the way you inhabit a character in the course of writing her dialogue. It's about the way we adopt certain roles over the course of writing a play.

At verious times in the process, a playwright temporarily adopts the role of shaman, social scientist, architect, poet, showman, and doctor.

Like a drag queen, the writer adopts temporary functional persona in service of uncovering and getting at an authentic core truth about himself and others and giving it effective expression in the world. The clothing and make-up allowances may be smaller, but the functions are the same.
