A play
is a poem
standing up.

Play Is The Thing!

Welcome to my site dedicated to the restless spirit of playwrights, bhikkhus, drag queens, and all other wierdos. The site (like my life) is always under construction, so forgive the detours, deadends, false starts, and whatever else lacks an arc of completion.

You Didn't Ask...

You can quote me

When I originated the site, every day I posted a new quotation related to craft from a working (or dead) playwright. New postings were suspended for the first part of this year, but they're back now, and all previous quotes are collected in a 5-page archive you can access here. When I want to goof off from a writing project, I find this a useful stack to hang around in and browse. It reminds me of an inclusive tradition that welcomes new writers and often provokes new angles from which to approach my current work.

Tickle your writing

A new writing tickler (prompt) is added to the site every day, and can be accessed with a link on the upper right corner of this page. (Brian Thorstenson in his classes uses much more sophisticated, elaborate and specific prompts that he calls triggers, and if you have a chance to work with him, jump at it!) The verbal ticklers here are more pared down words or phrases designed to provoke a range of possible interpretations and responses. Their usefulness lies in bringing to your writing a random influence that can provoke looking at your subject matter from angles and in ways you did not anticipate. The randomness is part of their value. You can also access a repository of these prompts here.

I added visual ticklers for awhile but that proved to be too much time stolen from the limited hours available to me for writing plays. I've archived the images that were posted daily from September to December, so click here if you're looking for a little visual stimulation to blend into a sluggish or ill-defined impulse, browse through them and see what percolates to the surface.

Write on!

Wanda Lust

You could wait a long time Miss Havisham,
a long time for that bonus round.
In the meantime
drama will have to serve.
I mean, love never lingers
but drama just goes on and on.

Words on Words

I'm always interested in how and when my characters walk through the door. I love it when characters walk in and their hair is full of snow. Or they're bleeding or they're soaking wet. Entrances tell a compact story and raise the stakes of the play.
